Nancy flew in on Friday morning, and I picked her up in my brand new Forester. We headed straight for Ruth's Diner in Emigration Canyon, which lived up to all the recommendations. Then we strolled around the aviary, where I showed Nancy my favorite birds. I love those owls so much, and I could just sit and watch that darned toucan all day!
(I am obsessed with all the tulips here in SLC)
That night was so perfect. We decided that, instead of getting each other birthday gifts (we each turned 35 within about a month of each other), we would splurge on a nice night out. We went to Gracie's, which has the best Old Fashioned's I've had so far in SLC. We sipped craft cocktails and laughed and laughed for hours. Kris joined us for a few hours of this, and it was great to see my best friend and boyfriend getting along so well (even if a lot of the conversation involved teasing me).
Saturday was a fabulous adventure to the Spiral Jetty. I really wasn't sure if it would be cool, and I didn't want to drag Nancy to something lame. But it totally exceeded expectations, especially since Nancy wanted to see the lake. We climbed on top of the hill to look down on it:
And then we traced the spiral with out feet.
And then we walked out into the Great Salt Lake.
Unfortunately, the GPS did not give us the best instructions and had us turn into a field, resulting in some scratches on my 2 day-old car. Which is exactly what happened to my last Sub, so it was kind of appropriate.
(It's not actually as bad as it looks)
On the way home we stopped at Leatherby's for decadent ice cream sundaes, then went home and watched the episode of Sex and the City where Carrie turns 35. Because we are basic bitches, and when we are together, we embrace that shit.
(I watch that episode every year on my birthday, and I don't care if it's basic; I stand by that quality of that show, especially that episode.)
There were many, many silly moments over this weekend, but one of my favorites was when we went through a car wash and I just sat there chatting away with Nancy and didn't realize I was actually supposed to be pulling forward to dry my car. This really doesn't sound that funny... I think you had to be there. But that's how most of our jokes are... Not funny to anyone but us. And that's just another thing I love about this girl. She is one of those people I can be 100% real with, and talk about anything and everything, from Starbucks nutrition info to what it means to be happy. She is a forever friend, and I'm so glad she came to visit.
