Yes, I realize it is May and I'm still writing about stuff that happened in February. I know it seems like, what's the point? But my blog is really just for me, and I like to document canyons and hikes for future reference.
So... cross country skiing! We were supposed to do Fiery Furnace that weekend, but the weather didn't cooperate, so we made the best of it. We got the nicest Air BnB in Idaho. It was an apartment over someone's garage, and the lady acted like our mom, greeting us with freshly baked brownies and checking road conditions for us.
Brian had a ski pass, so he went skiing in Jackson Hole. Amy and Chase and I set out to ski to Jenny Lake at Grand Teton National Park. I had never done this before and wasn't sure if I'd like it, but I LOVED it! There was this moment where I was behind Chase and gaining on him and told him to look out, and Amy yelled, "Oh my God, Erin has found her sport!"
The only issue we had was that we were skiing in white-out conditions. It was snowing pretty hard, and visibility was so bad we couldn't even see the mountains. At one point, Chase was poetically describing what he imagined the mountains must look like. When he finished Amy said, "That's great... but the mountains are actually over there." (The opposite of where he'd been pointing.)
After 4.5 miles of skiing, we finally reached Jenny Lake. This was our view.
But we just laughed about it and enjoyed the experience. On the way back, Chase and Amy got ahead of me, so I just put on some music and had my own private party. I was really enjoying myself and feeling good about this new activity and thinking that maybe I was a natural; maybe I really HAD found my sport.
When I was almost back to the parking lot, a tour group passed me going the other way. The guide actually turned around and came back to me to give me his card. "I can teach you how to have a lot more fun while doing a lot less work," he said sympathetically. His tone was a mix between feeling sorry for me and being worried about me. So I guess cross country skiing is NOT my sport... I'm just as big of a mess there as I am in every other aspect of my life!
