Perfect Phoenix Weekend

This weekend was exactly what I visualized when I pictured my social life in Phoenix.

Friday night Rachel and I went to this event called Ignite Phoenix. 18 people are chosen to give 5 minute presentations on a variety of topics. We learned about donuts, airport codes, autism, the sex trade in Phoenix, the importance of supporting local businesses, and Iran. There was a cocktail party afterwards where you could talk to the presenters. We're already looking forward to the next one in December, which is a 21 and over event.

I spent Saturday morning laying out by the pool, and Saturday afternoon I was invited to a coworker's house to watch football. I was pretty surprised by this invite; I've only said good morning to this guy a few times. Also, he's pretty hot, which means I'm scared to talk to him. But my friend said he thinks I'm really cool and he's not the type to invite someone just because they're new. (I should probably mention here that he lives with his girlfriend and they are very serious; he's not into me in that way.)

The party was really fun. There were some people there I knew, and I met some great new people as well. In the middle of the party, Amanda and I left to go to the Roller Derby. One of our coworkers was competing, and someone from our church is one of the refs. That was definitely an interesting experience. I really didn't understand much of what was going on, but I'd like to go back again.

(Quick note about Amanda- she is my new BFF out here. When I mentioned to my new pastor that I wanted to get involved in a small group, he hooked me up with Amanda. It turns out she teaches in my district and was at my school last year, so we know all the same people. She is so sweet, and we have a lot in common.)

I was a little tipsy Saturday night, and when I got home I texted Daniel, the guy I'd kinda been seeing but hadn't heard from in a while. Let's be honest- it was a booty call. Or actually, more like a makeout call. However, it was cleverly disguised because it wasn't super late. Luckily, by the time he texted back and asked me to meet him at a bar, I'd already taken off my makeup and didn't feel like leaving the house again. But I love that I have a guy I can call for that reason.

Sunday morning I attended a membership class at Trinity. I don't plan on joining right away, but I want to know more about the Mennonites. During church, I had people to sit by and saw people I knew. It will be so nice to have that kind of community here.

After church I raced over to my regular bar. I sit there for hours every Sunday drinking Diet Coke and watching like, five games at once. I think I'm a bit of a football whore- yes, I watch the Bears, but I'm more invested in the games where my fantasy guys are playing. This bar is full of guys my dad's age, and they're starting to get to know me now. I was talking to one guy about my fantasy team the other day, and he was like, "Hey, this girl actually knows what she's talking about!" Then he quickly apologized when he realized how bad that sounded. Another guy sat with me and was telling me about his time in 'Nam, and when the other guys started giving him a hard time about him being married, he put his arm around me and kissed me on the cheek. It was adorable.

So it was pretty much the perfect weekend. I love this life I'm creating for myself.

Why I Love Bust Magazine (and you should, too)

Since I am finally done with Practicum I and only have one project left to finish for my Reading and Language Theory class, I decided to spend the evening relaxing with the latest issue of my favorite magazine, Bust . In this issue, I read about: Fat women on reality shows A new version of roller derby called Derby Lite A global O that will be occurring on December 21-22 Recipes for finger foods to serve at holiday parties How to make your own yarn Asheville, NC (now I want to move there even more...) I got a little out of control...

I started my end of the year celebration a day early with margaritas at Lalo's. Unfortunately, since I don't drink very often, they affected me pretty quickly. I knocked my fork onto the sidewalk. Nancy (with her 80's hair) pretended not to know me. Nina gave me this look. Good times, good times. 40 more minutes of school, and then I am FREE!!!!!

Fall!

Okay, I’ll admit it.  I’m excited for fall.  I LOVE fall.  Things I’m looking forward to: Sweaters and hoodies Cinnamon candles  Leaves crunching under your feet Carving pumpkins and toasting the seeds (that I will give as gifts because I don’t actually like them) Going to the apple orchard with my mom… apple donuts and apple ciders slushees… Scary movies Watching my Charlie Brown DVDs Starting school!  I swear, September always flies by in an adrenaline-filled haze… The smell of burning leaves Football!!! Making apple pie (that will most likely be given as a gift because I’ll be dieting) Fall crafts (I think this year I want to attempt a wreath) Hot apple cider My one and only complaint about fall is that it means winter is coming…
