Sometimes it feels like life is totally kicking your ass. That's about where I'm at right now.
It's December. I hate December. I got off easy last year, and this year's making up for it.
There is one thing that is consistently good right now, and that is work. So I am going to write about that.
I am on the School Leadership Team. We had a meeting the other day, and the teachers started teasing my about my obsession with data and my stalkerish tendencies. It is true that, once I arrive at work, I have trouble remembering social conventions and have to remind myself to say "good morning" before jumping into a conversation about data. The ladies started teasing me about following them to the parking lot, waiting for them outside the bathroom, etc.
So I decided to live up to their expectations. I recruited my friend Donna to help with a prank at lunchtime. I copied tons of progress monitoring graphs, and we went out to the parking lot and stuck them under the ladies' windshield wipers. Unfortunately, I don't have a view of the parking lot from my classroom, but one of the Pre-K teachers (who was in the meeting) does. She was cracking up as she watched the ladies' confusion, and then she screamed out the window, "You've just been pranked by Miss B!"
I got to enjoy their reactions this morning. Kim (one of the ladies I pranked) yelled at some of our coworkers, "Ya'll are corrupting my sweet Miss B!"
"Corrupting?" Donna was indignant. "This was her idea!"
"But she's so nice!" said Kim.
"Or maybe you're just getting to know me better..." I replied.
The other thing that's making me happy at work is Henry Huggins. I found this book in our school library and started reading it to my primary intervention groups. They LOVE it. They are absolutely enthralled when I'm reading. They gasp, their eyes get big, they laugh, they ask questions... It's a reading teacher's dream. This book was written in 1950, and it is still funny and relevant; Beverly Cleary was a genius.
Since I'm very happy professionally, I figure that means a big pie in the face is coming at me soon. And I already have an idea of what it could be.
A super fancy charter school is opening in the town where I teach. They have a campus in the city with a 100% graduation rate.
Let's be honest, if my kid went to school in my district, I'd try to get them into a school like that.
It looks like we'll be losing at least 150 kids. I started doing the math... that's at least 6 teachers. And since I'm one of the newest people hired, I'd be one of the first to go...
Whatever. Not even going to think about it right now. Instead, I'm thinking that 3 weeks from today I will be arriving here:
To do this:
Can't wait.
