Granary Canyon

This was such a nice day in a canyon.

If someone asked me for a canyon recommendation in Moab, I wouldn't say, "OMG, do Granary!" (For the record, I would say "Lost and Found.") But it was easy and scenic and just a fun day with friends.

The upper part really wasn't that interesting. A few rappels, a small natural bridge, and it opens up to a nice view of the La Sal Mountains. This is the part of the canyon where I just really enjoyed the conversation, especially getting to know my new friend, Sarah.

The beta was odd because it said that, when the canyon opens up, you jump over to the next drainage over, which is Lower Granary. We forgot about this and cruised along until we came to a bigger rappel and saw no signs of an anchor. But this was my favorite part of the canyon. Oh my holy, the view! I think we were standing on a giant arch. And as Brian traversed the rock, he stopped and said, "Look at this!" It looked like just a crack in the ground to step over, but when you peered down into it, you could see a few hundred feet down! And there were a few cracks in a row like this! I would love to see what that looks like from the bottom.

We found our way over into Lower Granary and enjoyed an overhanging rappel into this beautiful (and echo-ey) alcove.

(I love how this picture looks like an ad for canyoneering... We are both posing with cheesy grins on our faces. And I am clearly slacking on the job there... Sorry, Jack.)

We encountered a few potholes and Jack and Brian stayed dry.

Meanwhile, Sarah and I had a "wet teacher" contest.

(Contemplating my stupid short legs... "Can I get a shoulder, please?")

("Thanks, friend!")

I started to climb down into a pothole and realized my phone was still in my pocket. "I'm just going to throw it," I announced. "No, don't do it!" the boys yelled. "It's fine," I said, and tossed it. "No, it's not fine," Jack replied as Brian fished my phone out of another pothole. Luckily, it was a small pothole and my phone is still functional.

(Anchor stretched way across a pothole)

(Gorgeous rappel... Looks like an amaryllis bulb)

The hike out seemed never ending; the hill was relentless. But it really wasn't that bad, and we took our time. It was so nice to be with a group that was in no hurry. We just enjoyed each other's company and were happy to be outside in a beautiful place.

Why I Love Bust Magazine (and you should, too)

Since I am finally done with Practicum I and only have one project left to finish for my Reading and Language Theory class, I decided to spend the evening relaxing with the latest issue of my favorite magazine, Bust . In this issue, I read about: Fat women on reality shows A new version of roller derby called Derby Lite A global O that will be occurring on December 21-22 Recipes for finger foods to serve at holiday parties How to make your own yarn Asheville, NC (now I want to move there even more...) Amy Poehler's views on feminism Divorce ranches in Nevada from the 1930's through the 1960's (it used to be really hard to get a divorce, and Nevada had laws that made it super easy) Homemade Christmas gift ideas A guide to "handling some of life's major milestones- marriage, childbirth, and death- with a DIY frame of mind" The monthly "One-handed read" column And of course, there are the fashion and beauty sections. Also, book, movie, and music revie

I got a little out of control...

I started my end of the year celebration a day early with margaritas at Lalo's. Unfortunately, since I don't drink very often, they affected me pretty quickly. I knocked my fork onto the sidewalk. Nancy (with her 80's hair) pretended not to know me. Nina gave me this look. Good times, good times. 40 more minutes of school, and then I am FREE!!!!!

Fall!

Okay, I’ll admit it.  I’m excited for fall.  I LOVE fall.  Things I’m looking forward to: Sweaters and hoodies Cinnamon candles  Leaves crunching under your feet Carving pumpkins and toasting the seeds (that I will give as gifts because I don’t actually like them) Going to the apple orchard with my mom… apple donuts and apple ciders slushees… Scary movies Watching my Charlie Brown DVDs Starting school!  I swear, September always flies by in an adrenaline-filled haze… The smell of burning leaves Football!!! Making apple pie (that will most likely be given as a gift because I’ll be dieting) Fall crafts (I think this year I want to attempt a wreath) Hot apple cider My one and only complaint about fall is that it means winter is coming…
