It started out simple. It always does.
I hate coming home to an empty apartment after a trip. It feels lonely. So, I invited a couple friends over for the night I get back: Sia, Jason, Kristin, and her boyfriend Adam.
Jason and Adam like beer, and I thought it would be fun to bring back local Montana beers that you can't buy in Phoenix. I had no idea what I was doing, so I asked for help at a few different places. At one point, an entire store was involved in my purchase.
There are now eight six-packs in my car. Let's not talk about how much I've spent on beer. And I don't even like this stuff! I'm happy with Old Style or PBR!
Then I thought, well, I have to serve some kind of food. What goes well with beer? Homemade pretzels. After looking at recipes, I realized I'd need to make a trip to Ikea here in Salt Lake to get some utensils. And a serving platter. Oh, and bowls. Because I can't just serve pretzels. Gotta have a cheese dip and mustard dip, too. Homemade, of course. So the trip to Ikea got a little pricey.
Then I thought, what if people are bored? There needs to be some kind of activity... Beer, pretzels, and video games! It's the perfect combo! But the only games I really like are the old school ones, so I found this console on Amazon that lets you play NES and SNES games and also ordered Super Mario All-Stars and Mario Kart.
The next thing I'm thinking about is Kristin... She is gluten and dairy-free. Perhaps a bottle of wine for her... What's ten more dollars at this point?
The problem is, I can't afford any of this. But I can't stop! I'm out of control. Because I have a VISION. And as I've gotten to know my birth mother and her mother, I've realized they're the same way. We have this idea of how things should go, and we plan obsessively, and when something inevitably goes wrong, we flip out.
And this is the part I need to work on. Someone will cancel. Someone won't want to play video games. The pretzels might not turn out. Things never go the way you think they will. So I need to just calm the f- down and be thankful for time with my friends.
