New Classroom

I have always sucked at decorating my classroom. I don't know how teachers just seem to have this natural ability to decorate beautiful, kid-friendly spaces. My goal this year was to have a nice classroom, and my friend Nicole recommended a Hollywood theme. I fell in love with this idea. I worked really hard all week, and here's what I've done with the space.

Looking at these pictures, it really doesn't look like much. The first one is my word wall with my classroom library below it. There aren't many books yet, but that will change when I finish bringing my books from home. The posters on the left are my metacognitive strategies, and the ones on the right are my classroom rules and consequences. I have big tables in my classroom, and in the middle of each table is a popcorn container with extra pencils, a sharpener, stapler, and 3 hole punch. There are also tissues at each table so the kids won't have to get up and disrupt class as much.

I got posters and the books to go with them for this corner. I've read Gone With the Wind, but not the Maltese Falcon.

I need to fix this bulletin board. It's making me crazy that the letters and spotlights are off-center. On the left are pictures of Marlon Brando and Rock Hudson. (Rachel and I used to have matching posters of Rock Hudson hanging in our bedrooms.) On the right is Rita Hayworth, Fred and Ginger, and James Dean. And in the middle is an inflatable award that I'm afraid the kids will destroy.

This is on the back wall. On the left are pocket charts for reading conferences. On the right is my book chat sign up.
If you look closely, you can see the sign hanging that says, "You rock, Ms. B!" When I got to work the other day, I found that sign and another one that said, "I love this classroom!" and was signed by our assistant principal. He explained it to me when I went to thank him. Apparently there's a 7th grade teacher who just got switched from social studies to reading and is kind of nervous. Several of the administrators took him into my classroom and said, "This is what a reading classroom should look like." Makes me so happy!

So there are a few pics from my classroom. I forgot to take a picture of the bulletin board that took me forever to make, so I'll try to post that tomorrow. School starts tomorrow, and I am soooo excited!

That's fantastic! How creative! And it sounds like you are in a school where you are appreciated and acknowledged. You rock, Ms. B!

Thanks, guys! I think the kids liked it. They had lots of questions about the posters, and they really loved walking the red carpet to come into my classroom.

Why I Love Bust Magazine (and you should, too)

Since I am finally done with Practicum I and only have one project left to finish for my Reading and Language Theory class, I decided to spend the evening relaxing with the latest issue of my favorite magazine, Bust . In this issue, I read about: Fat women on reality shows A new version of roller derby called Derby Lite A global O that will be occurring on December 21-22 Recipes for finger foods to serve at holiday parties How to make your own yarn Asheville, NC (now I want to move there even more...) Amy Poehler's views on feminism Divorce ranches in Nevada from the 1930's through the 1960's (it used to be really hard to get a divorce, and Nevada had laws that made it super easy) Homemade Christmas gift ideas A guide to "handling some of life's major milestones- marriage, childbirth, and death- with a DIY frame of mind" The monthly "One-handed read" column And of course, there are the fashion and beauty sections. Also, book, movie, and music revie

I got a little out of control...

I started my end of the year celebration a day early with margaritas at Lalo's. Unfortunately, since I don't drink very often, they affected me pretty quickly. I knocked my fork onto the sidewalk. Nancy (with her 80's hair) pretended not to know me. Nina gave me this look. Good times, good times. 40 more minutes of school, and then I am FREE!!!!!

Fall!

Okay, I’ll admit it.  I’m excited for fall.  I LOVE fall.  Things I’m looking forward to: Sweaters and hoodies Cinnamon candles  Leaves crunching under your feet Carving pumpkins and toasting the seeds (that I will give as gifts because I don’t actually like them) Going to the apple orchard with my mom… apple donuts and apple ciders slushees… Scary movies Watching my Charlie Brown DVDs Starting school!  I swear, September always flies by in an adrenaline-filled haze… The smell of burning leaves Football!!! Making apple pie (that will most likely be given as a gift because I’ll be dieting) Fall crafts (I think this year I want to attempt a wreath) Hot apple cider My one and only complaint about fall is that it means winter is coming…
