What a day. First I had to deal with A. and A., who I found out were bullying this sweet girl, T. And it was the nasty, subtle bullying, like the kind I read about in Odd Girl Out. (Awesome book, by the way.) They have been making fun of her hair. That's such a big deal with my girls. And when you look at this poor girl, you just know she can't afford to get her hair done. So anyway, I really went off on these girls, and now I think they're kind of scared of me and they know I'm not playing around. I also talked to the most popular girl in the class (who is also the nicest girl) and let her know what's going on, and she's going to look out for T. It's never the popular girls that I see doing the bullying. They're secure in themselves and nice to everybody, which is why they're popular. It's like the not-so-popular girls think that if they put someone down, they'll look better. So upsetting!!!!
Then I had issues with this boy, L. He has a good heart, but he can't keep his mouth shut. So he called someone a crack addict, and I gave him a strike. (3 strikes= no Fun Friday. And while everyone else is having a half hour of free time, you have to sit and write a letter to your parents explaining why you don't have Fun Friday.) Anyway, he got all upset and started drawing this angry, violent picture. He finished, and without pausing my teaching, I walked over, ripped it out of his notebook, and put in on my desk. I think someone must have said something to him about it, but all I heard was him calling someone stupid. That resulted in his 3rd strike, and which point he started crying and throwing things. So I had to call security to escort him to the office; not because he was in trouble, but because he just needed to calm down.
When he came back, he and this other boy, A., started having words. A. was super angry and wanting to fight. I managed to keep them apart till we got out to the buses, at which point A. jumped L. This boy A. has so many issues. He's a sneaky troublemaker; he does something wrong, I witness it, and he STILL gets sooo upset and claims he didn't do it. It's like he actually believes he didn't do it.
But the day was somewhat redeemed by my trip to the beach. I stopped by on my way home and just laid out for a while. I had a blue snow cone (my favorite) and actually fell asleep on the beach. I want to make the most of every minute of beautiful weather!
