What really grinds my gears...

(as Peter Griffin would say).

1. I was watching the local news tonight. There was a story about a man who needs a liver transplant. Another family member's dying wish was that her liver be donated to this man. He is married with four little girls. But there was some kind of insurance mix up, and the hospital said, unless you come up with $200,000 right now, the liver goes to someone else. And it did. People are upset, and the governor says we should blame Obama and his Obamacare. Then the news showed a viewer comment from Facebook, saying that since the man had a translator, he was most likely here illegally and didn't deserve the liver. Seriously? I was livid. Of course, if he was here illegally, that's not right. But here's my solution to that- give him the liver. Let him live. Then worry about all that stuff. Of course he should have to pay the bill, and if he's here illegally, he should have to go back to where he came from. But a father's life is on the line. Can we worry about the other stuff later? Also, it's pretty audacious to assume that just because someone doesn't speak English means that they are here illegally. I've learned a lot teaching where I do. Many of our students' parents require translators, and it doesn't mean they're here illegally, or even that they don't speak English. Most of them can get by in English, but when it comes to something important like their child's education, they don't want to be limited by language barriers. Anyway, enough about that.

2. Republicans and the folks over at Fox News are freaking out about Obama's new book. In it, he highlights historical figures and their admirable character traits. One of these people is Chief Sitting Bull, the Lakota chief whose tribe fought at the Battle of Little Big Horn (aka Custer's last stand). Apparently the Native Americans are still our enemies, and we were right and they were wrong. I didn't realize the manifest destiny philosophy was still alive and well. Scary. Maybe there are still people out there who believe that God sent smallpox to kill the Native Americans, and he wanted us to have their land so it was totally okay for the white guys to rub blankets all over themselves and then send them to the Native Americans. Seriously disturbing. If you don't like Obama's politics, that's okay. But attacking him over this just makes you look like a creepy extremist.

3. Pete is pissing me off as well. It's a long story, but basically it finally occurred to me how low I am on his list of priorities, and I thought, why do I make him a high priority? I'm such an idiot.

Why I Love Bust Magazine (and you should, too)

Since I am finally done with Practicum I and only have one project left to finish for my Reading and Language Theory class, I decided to spend the evening relaxing with the latest issue of my favorite magazine, Bust . In this issue, I read about: Fat women on reality shows A new version of roller derby called Derby Lite A global O that will be occurring on December 21-22 Recipes for finger foods to serve at holiday parties How to make your own yarn Asheville, NC (now I want to move there even more...) Amy Poehler's views on feminism Divorce ranches in Nevada from the 1930's through the 1960's (it used to be really hard to get a divorce, and Nevada had laws that made it super easy) Homemade Christmas gift ideas A guide to "handling some of life's major milestones- marriage, childbirth, and death- with a DIY frame of mind" The monthly "One-handed read" column And of course, there are the fashion and beauty sections. Also, book, movie, and music revie

I got a little out of control...

I started my end of the year celebration a day early with margaritas at Lalo's. Unfortunately, since I don't drink very often, they affected me pretty quickly. I knocked my fork onto the sidewalk. Nancy (with her 80's hair) pretended not to know me. Nina gave me this look. Good times, good times. 40 more minutes of school, and then I am FREE!!!!!

Fall!

Okay, I’ll admit it.  I’m excited for fall.  I LOVE fall.  Things I’m looking forward to: Sweaters and hoodies Cinnamon candles  Leaves crunching under your feet Carving pumpkins and toasting the seeds (that I will give as gifts because I don’t actually like them) Going to the apple orchard with my mom… apple donuts and apple ciders slushees… Scary movies Watching my Charlie Brown DVDs Starting school!  I swear, September always flies by in an adrenaline-filled haze… The smell of burning leaves Football!!! Making apple pie (that will most likely be given as a gift because I’ll be dieting) Fall crafts (I think this year I want to attempt a wreath) Hot apple cider My one and only complaint about fall is that it means winter is coming…
