Saturday began with us heading back to Green River, where Jason discovered that the part he'd purchased wasn't going to work. At that point, he gave up and left his truck in Green River. All three of us crammed into my Subaru and headed for Escalante.

On the way out of town, we stopped by the Crystal Geyser. Jason went right up to the pipe and inhaled the sulphur. We thought he was going to die choking. Kristin and I kept a safe distance and explored this intriguing spot. We were surprised that the water was cool. It looked like something you'd see at Yellowstone; the rocks had turned all different colors.
Our drive to Escalante took seven hours. There were just so many things to see! We had to keep stopping to take panoramic pictures, and we stopped to see Jason's grandma's grave. As we were driving through Capitol Reef, Kristin noticed this gem. (She is obsessed with flow, so we weren't surprised that she was the one to spot the waterfall.) The area was closed, but we poached it and played anyway.

We finally arrived in Escalante. I was so, so excited to be in this notorious canyoneering spot. Even seeing this sign thrilled me, thinking of all the canyons that were waiting for us in this beautiful desert.
Our campsite for the next few nights was the Batty Caves. (Named for brothers who built ship hulls in one of the caves and slept in the other. Their beds are still there.) Kristin and Jason were excited to sleep in the cave, but I was happy to stay in my car. I saw spiders crawling on the walls, and mice (who we called Templeton because they kept stealing our stuff) darted in and out of the cave. Still, it was a really fun spot to call home for a few days. There is even a "guest book" to sign.
