Weekend

This weekend was unexpectedly great.

Whitney and I hung out on Friday night.  We started the evening at Rootstock.  I felt very grown-up just ordering a glass of fancy whiskey.  They have my favorite bourbon there, too, so I know I'll be back.  The food was also delicious.

The night was still young after Rootstock.  We were teetering on the edge of drunk (at least I was) and needed a break from alcohol.  So our next stop was iCream, where you choose if you want ice cream, frozen yogurt, or pudding, and they make it right there in front of you.  Last week I had white chocolate ice cream with Oreos, and it was awesome.  This time, I went for the frozen yogurt option (stupid Weight Watchers) and was not happy.  I don't like frozen yogurt that actually tastes like yogurt.

I asked Whitney what she thought about checking out the line for Violet Hour, and she was down, so we strolled over there and hopped in line.  We were seated quickly, and, as usual, I ordered a drink where I only recognized like, one ingredient.  But that's what I love about Violet Hour.  Anyway, it ended up being the perfect night out.  We need to do that more often.

Most of Saturday was spent at my district's back-to-school carnival, which was surprisingly pleasant, because I just hung out with April the whole time.  Saturday night was Kris's birthday party, and she had such a fun theme.  It was her "favorite things."  The Evite listed all of her favorite foods, and people could sign up to bring them.  Anything that wasn't signed up for, Kris provided.  She figured since she can't drink, she might as well eat!

This morning I met Anne, Liz, and Laurel at an indoor rock climbing place.  When I told Jason what I was doing, he laughed out loud at me.  I was like, you don't understand!  This is all I have!  And actually, I had fun.  Laurel and I did not like the auto-belays, but I did a lot better when Anne and Liz had me on belay.  It was definitely a good workout, and it's not easy!  It was weird because there are similarities to rappelling, but just enough differences that I didn't know what I was doing.  Also, I had said that I was going to downclimb everything (since that's what I really need to work on), but that didn't work out so well.  It's just so unrealistic.  Plastic is not rock.  Those convenient handholds do not occur in nature.  But, I guess to make up for that, in nature you get more grip on the rock than you do on plastic.  I don't really think indoor rock climbing will make me a better canyoneer, but I still enjoyed it.  Oh, and it was fun to see what bad-asses my friends are!  They were so good!  I want to get them in a canyon; I know they'd love it!!!

I met my parents for lunch afterwards, which was all right, although a little tense.  My dad still strongly disapproves of my life choices, so he was mostly quiet.  The only things he had to contribute to the conversation were negative. Oh well.  It is what it is.

I spent the rest of the afternoon crafting.  (Starting on Christmas gifts already!  Giving everyone handmade gifts is a huge undertaking!)  The old Batman movies are on, so I've been watching those.  (Kristin and Jason got me hooked.  How had I never seen Dark Knight until this trip???  After I saw that and loved it, Jason took me to The Dark Knight Rises the next night, and I loved that, too.  Jason rolled his eyes at my tears at the end, but I was emotionally involved.  Anyway, I definitely broadened my movie horizons on the trip.)  The True Blood season finale will be on in a little while, which is also exciting.  Pretty much the perfect Sunday!  Just wish it wasn't raining... I didn't get in all my runs this week.  I will definitely go tomorrow.

You know what the best part of this weekend is?  I'm not dreading going to work tomorrow.

Why I Love Bust Magazine (and you should, too)

Since I am finally done with Practicum I and only have one project left to finish for my Reading and Language Theory class, I decided to spend the evening relaxing with the latest issue of my favorite magazine, Bust . In this issue, I read about: Fat women on reality shows A new version of roller derby called Derby Lite A global O that will be occurring on December 21-22 Recipes for finger foods to serve at holiday parties How to make your own yarn Asheville, NC (now I want to move there even more...) Amy Poehler's views on feminism Divorce ranches in Nevada from the 1930's through the 1960's (it used to be really hard to get a divorce, and Nevada had laws that made it super easy) Homemade Christmas gift ideas A guide to "handling some of life's major milestones- marriage, childbirth, and death- with a DIY frame of mind" The monthly "One-handed read" column And of course, there are the fashion and beauty sections. Also, book, movie, and music revie

I got a little out of control...

I started my end of the year celebration a day early with margaritas at Lalo's. Unfortunately, since I don't drink very often, they affected me pretty quickly. I knocked my fork onto the sidewalk. Nancy (with her 80's hair) pretended not to know me. Nina gave me this look. Good times, good times. 40 more minutes of school, and then I am FREE!!!!!

Fall!

Okay, I’ll admit it.  I’m excited for fall.  I LOVE fall.  Things I’m looking forward to: Sweaters and hoodies Cinnamon candles  Leaves crunching under your feet Carving pumpkins and toasting the seeds (that I will give as gifts because I don’t actually like them) Going to the apple orchard with my mom… apple donuts and apple ciders slushees… Scary movies Watching my Charlie Brown DVDs Starting school!  I swear, September always flies by in an adrenaline-filled haze… The smell of burning leaves Football!!! Making apple pie (that will most likely be given as a gift because I’ll be dieting) Fall crafts (I think this year I want to attempt a wreath) Hot apple cider My one and only complaint about fall is that it means winter is coming…
