Tuesday was not the best day. I had trouble sleeping the night before, which turned into a panic attack about the Das Boot approach to the Subway. As I was laying there trying to sleep, I overheard a conversation between Jason and Kristin that upset me even more. I shared my concerns over lunch at the outfitter’s and asked if I could just do the standard approach and meet them in the canyon. They were insistent that this was a bad idea (and they were right). We compromised and decided to do the Russell Gulch approach instead, which has several 90-foot rappels.
We spent the rest of the day driving to Zion. Jason was excited to be back at his favorite place in the world. Kristin and I hadn’t been there since we were kids, so we were really excited to see it again. Jason pointed out sites like the peach tree, Checkerboard Mesa, and trails to the side canyons. There was a lot of anticipation and excitement for this part of our trip.
