This is one of our country’s newest national monuments, and there was quite a bit of opposition to it. I hate that conservation always seems to be so controversial. Here is the story of how this woman slowly bought up the land and petititioned to make it a national monument:
There isn’t much to do here, but it is a wild place. Even if they never develop it, there’s value in that. There’s a 17 mile loop through the monument with a few hiking trails, but I couldn’t find descriptions for those hikes anywhere and wasn’t feeling particularly adventurous. Normally I’d just start walking, but the bugs were horrendous. At one point, there was a gorgeous view of Mount Katahdin (the end of the Appalachian Trail).
