Taunton, Weir Farm, and Springfield Armory

Yesterday just kind of sucked! It started off all right... I stopped in Taunton, which is where my ancestor, Philip Horr, lived. He’s the one who fought in the Revolution and got us into the D.A.R. I wasn’t able to visit their historical society, but I at least wanted to see the town. I kept pulling over to take pictures and then got doughnuts (and they seriously might be the best doughnuts I’ve ever had in my life), but I really didn’t have time for this.

There was so much traffic driving to Connecticut, so it took me almost four hours to get to Weir Farm. You know, the east coast is very pretty, but I could never live out here. Way too much traffic.

Weir Farm was pretty, but I was stressed and didn’t have much time to spend there. J. Alden Weir was the first American Impressionist, which was funny because he studied art in Paris for five years and thought Impressionism was garbage.

I liked the stars on the ceiling of his studio. He was copying the studios where he’d studied in Paris. The instructors put the stars there to remind the students that nature still existed, even though they were stuck inside most of the time.

Oh, fun fact- Weir’s son in law did the sculpture at This is the Place Hertiage Park in SLC!

I had a two hour drive up to Springfield, MA, and there was so much traffic and I kept making wrong turns because the streets are stupid out here, so I made it to the armory just fifteen minutes before closing. Luckily, that was all I needed. I’m a pacifist, so looking at guns was just not that thrilling to me.

My Air BnB for the night was at this girl’s house. She was very nice, but her boyfriend was really trashy. He was white, but he kept using the N-word. That’s not okay, is it?? They had plans to go out clubbing last night, so around 9:00, their friends started arriving to pre-game. I didn’t want to go use the shower because people were constantly going in and out of that bathroom. I wanted to get to bed early because I had an early day today, but they were so loud and didn’t leave till almost 11:00. They came back in around 2:00 and didn’t even try to be quiet. I was so annoyed. But I guess that’s what happens when you are trying to book the cheapest possible accommodations.

Why I Love Bust Magazine (and you should, too)

Since I am finally done with Practicum I and only have one project left to finish for my Reading and Language Theory class, I decided to spend the evening relaxing with the latest issue of my favorite magazine, Bust . In this issue, I read about: Fat women on reality shows A new version of roller derby called Derby Lite A global O that will be occurring on December 21-22 Recipes for finger foods to serve at holiday parties How to make your own yarn Asheville, NC (now I want to move there even more...) Amy Poehler's views on feminism Divorce ranches in Nevada from the 1930's through the 1960's (it used to be really hard to get a divorce, and Nevada had laws that made it super easy) Homemade Christmas gift ideas A guide to "handling some of life's major milestones- marriage, childbirth, and death- with a DIY frame of mind" The monthly "One-handed read" column And of course, there are the fashion and beauty sections. Also, book, movie, and music revie

I got a little out of control...

I started my end of the year celebration a day early with margaritas at Lalo's. Unfortunately, since I don't drink very often, they affected me pretty quickly. I knocked my fork onto the sidewalk. Nancy (with her 80's hair) pretended not to know me. Nina gave me this look. Good times, good times. 40 more minutes of school, and then I am FREE!!!!!

Fall!

Okay, I’ll admit it.  I’m excited for fall.  I LOVE fall.  Things I’m looking forward to: Sweaters and hoodies Cinnamon candles  Leaves crunching under your feet Carving pumpkins and toasting the seeds (that I will give as gifts because I don’t actually like them) Going to the apple orchard with my mom… apple donuts and apple ciders slushees… Scary movies Watching my Charlie Brown DVDs Starting school!  I swear, September always flies by in an adrenaline-filled haze… The smell of burning leaves Football!!! Making apple pie (that will most likely be given as a gift because I’ll be dieting) Fall crafts (I think this year I want to attempt a wreath) Hot apple cider My one and only complaint about fall is that it means winter is coming…
